Expired Rabies Vaccine: What to Know

A vaccine’s labelled expiry date marks the end of the period in which its quality is supported under the required storage conditions. An expired vial, or one stored outside its recommended temperature range, may not be suitable for use. Do not decide that a dose is acceptable because the liquid looks normal. Rabies prevention depends on the correct product, timing, wound care, and a schedule selected for the type of exposure and your previous vaccination history. An expired dose may need to be replaced or repeated, so keep the vial, packaging, batch details, and dates available for the clinician.

Do not use an expired dose or delay advice while trying to interpret the label. Wash a bite, scratch, or area contaminated with saliva thoroughly with soap and running water, if this can be done safely. Avoid handling the animal and obtain details about the incident, including the animal, location, time, wound, and any doses already given. Contact an emergency department or urgent medical service promptly for an exposure review. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis may include wound care, vaccine, and other treatment depending on the assessment. Arrange rabies vaccination advice for prevention planning before travel or animal contact.

Seek urgent medical care after any potentially rabid animal bite or scratch, saliva contact with broken skin or the eyes or mouth, or an exposure that cannot be reliably assessed. Do not wait for symptoms: once rabies illness develops, prevention is no longer the same as post-exposure care. Emergency help is appropriate for uncontrolled bleeding, severe wounds, breathing difficulty, collapse, or a serious allergic reaction after a vaccine.
