What should you know about expert PET-CT scans?

The radiotracer travels through the body and may collect in tissue using more glucose. The PET images show this activity, while the CT images show the location and structure. Together, the images can help a specialist look for cancer, assess treatment response, or investigate disease that is difficult to locate. Activity is not specific to cancer: infection and inflammation can also affect the scan, so results are interpreted with your history and other tests.

You may be asked to rest quietly after the tracer is given and then lie still while the scanner records images. The scan itself is not usually painful, although remaining still can be uncomfortable. A PET-CT Scanner is open at both ends, but tell the team if enclosed spaces are difficult for you.

Follow the centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, exercise, and medicines. Tell the team if you have diabetes, could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have recently had an infection or surgery. Wear comfortable clothing and remove metal items when asked. Afterward, follow the centre’s advice about fluids, activity, and contact with others. The FDG Radiotracer leaves the body naturally, and the team will explain any precautions that apply to you.

A PET-CT Scan may be used while assessing conditions such as Cancer of Unknown Primary or Lymphoma.

A PET-CT appointment is generally planned rather than urgent. Contact the imaging team before attending if you cannot follow the preparation instructions, have a new illness, or think you may be pregnant. After the scan, seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or another rapidly worsening symptom, and tell staff about the recent tracer or any other medicine given.
