Exhale wheezing sound: what to know

Wheezing is a high-pitched sound produced when air moves through narrowed or inflamed airways. Asthma and COPD can cause recurrent wheeze; Acute Bronchitis may cause temporary airway irritation. Allergic Rhinitis can add upper-airway congestion, while Bronchiolitis is a possible cause in young children. Wheezing with sudden swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, vomiting or faintness can indicate Anaphylaxis and is an emergency.

Stop exertion, sit upright, loosen restrictive clothing and move away from smoke, dust or a known trigger. If a clinician has prescribed a reliever inhaler, use it exactly as your action plan says. Keep track of onset, triggers, cough, fever and response to treatment. Do not borrow another person’s inhaler or rely on steam if symptoms are significant.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, exhaustion, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening wheeze. Sudden wheezing after food, medicine or an insect sting also needs emergency help, especially with swelling or hives. A Nebuliser Treatment may be used by clinicians in some situations, but urgent evaluation determines what is appropriate.

Ask whether the sound is wheeze, how to use your inhaler, which triggers to avoid, and whether you need lung-function testing. For recurring symptoms, ask for a written action plan and clear thresholds for urgent care.
