Short answer

Excessive thirst before labor may reflect heat, reduced intake, or fluid loss, but persistent thirst or thirst with other symptoms should be discussed with your maternity team.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Check for
Heat, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, darker urine, and reduced urination
Call maternity care
Persistent thirst, fluid leaking, bleeding, or reduced fetal movement
Emergency signs
Fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down

What thirst may signal

Late pregnancy can make heat and exertion harder to tolerate. Sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or simply not drinking enough can lead to dehydration, with dry mouth, darker urine, headache, dizziness, or reduced urination. Thirst with frequent urination, unusual tiredness, blurred vision, or nausea may also prompt a blood-glucose check; thirst is not a reliable way to tell which condition is present.

Your maternity team will also consider contractions, fluid leaking, bleeding, fetal movement, blood pressure, and your pregnancy history. Follow the local instructions you were given about eating and drinking once labor starts or if a procedure is planned.

How to respond

Sip water regularly while following your maternity team’s instructions. Rest somewhere cool, keep track of urine changes, and mention vomiting, diarrhoea, or fever when you call. Do not rapidly drink large volumes, take unapproved electrolyte products, or change prescribed medicines without advice.

Call your maternity service if thirst is strong, persistent, or difficult to manage. If you cannot keep fluids down, an assessment may be needed and IV Fluid Therapy may be considered in acute care.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity unit urgently for regular painful contractions, vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking, reduced fetal movement, severe headache, vision changes, or severe abdominal pain. Seek emergency help for fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or very little urine. These symptoms require assessment even when labor has not clearly begun.

Questions for your doctor

How should I drink if labor may be starting? Which symptoms mean I should come to the maternity unit? Should dehydration or blood glucose be checked? What can I use if vomiting prevents drinking? Are there procedure-specific instructions I should follow?

Questions people ask

Is thirst a sign that labor has started?

Thirst alone does not show that labor has begun. Watch for the labor signs and instructions provided by your maternity team.

Can I drink water during early labor?

Follow your maternity team’s guidance, which depends on your situation and any planned procedure. Tell them if you feel unusually thirsty or cannot drink.
