What should you know about excessive freckles?

Short answer
Excessive freckles are usually a visible pattern of sun-related pigment, but new or changing spots should be checked rather than assumed to be freckles.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can mean
Freckles are small, flat tan-to-brown marks caused by pigment-producing cells responding to ultraviolet exposure. They often appear on the face, shoulders, chest, and arms, and may become darker after sun exposure. Some people inherit a tendency to freckle. Freckles are generally uniform in colour and shape, but a spot that stands out from the others or changes over time deserves a professional look because several types of pigmented lesion can resemble one another.
What you can do
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin, reapply as directed, and add shade, clothing, and a hat when outdoors. Avoid tanning beds and deliberate tanning, which can deepen pigment and add ultraviolet damage. Do not use harsh bleaching products or pick at spots. If you want cosmetic reduction, a clinician may discuss IPL photofacial or picosecond laser treatment after examining your skin, pigment type, and risk of post-treatment colour change.
When to seek care
Arrange a skin examination for a new spot, rapid growth, uneven border, several colours, bleeding, crusting, persistent itching, or a mark that looks unlike your other freckles. Take note of changes and avoid delaying assessment while trying a cosmetic product. A changing pigmented lesion should be evaluated in person.
Questions for your doctor
Does this spot have the typical features of a freckle? Should it be photographed or monitored? Which pigment treatment is appropriate for my skin tone and sun-exposure pattern?
