What should you know about etiology of hepatitis A?

Short answer
Hepatitis A is caused by a virus that infects the liver and spreads mainly through contaminated food, water, or close personal contact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cause
- Hepatitis A virus
- Main spread
- Contaminated food, water, or close contact
- Long-term infection
- Usually does not persist as chronic hepatitis
What the cause means
The virus can pass from tiny amounts of infected stool into the mouth. This may happen when handwashing is inadequate, through unsafe food or water, or during close household or sexual contact. It does not become a long-term infection in the same way as some other viral hepatitis types. Feeling generally unwell, nausea, loss of appetite, and dark urine can occur as the liver responds to infection; some people have few or no noticeable symptoms.
What to do next
Arrange medical advice if hepatitis A is suspected. A clinician may assess symptoms and liver health with an examination and blood tests such as a liver function test. Rest, fluids, and light meals can help while you recover. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Ask about hepatitis A vaccination after an exposure or before travel when relevant.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for confusion, unusual sleepiness, repeated vomiting, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening yellowing of the skin or eyes. Contact a clinician promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, your urine becomes very dark, or you are pregnant or have existing liver disease.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms be hepatitis A, and which tests would confirm it? How should I protect people at home? Do I need vaccination or follow-up for my liver?

Questions people ask
Can hepatitis A spread before symptoms appear?
Yes. A person may spread the virus before recognising that they are unwell, which makes careful hand hygiene important.
Does hepatitis A come from poor food choices alone?
No. It can spread through contaminated food or water and through close contact with an infected person.
