Ethanol urine test: what to know

A direct ethanol test detects alcohol in the submitted urine at the time of analysis. Urine findings do not necessarily match the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream or show whether someone is impaired when the sample is collected. Hydration, bladder timing, storage, and collection procedures can affect interpretation.

The test may be requested for a clinical assessment, monitoring plan, or another defined purpose. Ask the service which assay was ordered and how it reports the result.

Follow the collection instructions exactly, provide the sample to the authorised collector, and mention prescribed medicines, products, or possible contamination concerns. Do not add anything to a sample or try to change its concentration; an invalid specimen can delay the assessment.

If a result is unexpected, request an explanation of the collection record, test method, reporting units, and any confirmation procedure. If testing relates to treatment, discuss alcohol use honestly with your clinician so they can consider withdrawal risk, medicines, liver health, and safety.

Seek urgent medical help for severe drowsiness, confusion, repeated vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, or an injury after drinking. If you drink heavily and develop shaking, sweating, agitation, hallucinations, or seizures after stopping, seek emergency care rather than trying to manage withdrawal alone.

Ask what the urine result can establish, how timing affects it, whether confirmation is available, and whether a blood or breath test would answer a different clinical question. Ask for support if reducing alcohol feels difficult or unsafe.
