What should you know about erythema nodosum in rheumatoid arthritis?

Erythema nodosum typically appears as painful, warm lumps under the skin, often over the shins. The colour may change as the lesions settle, and bruising-like shades can appear during healing. It does not usually form an open ulcer. When rheumatoid arthritis is present, skin nodules may occur during inflammatory activity, but a new lump should not automatically be attributed to RA. Medicines, infections, and other inflammatory conditions can also be considered. Joint pain, hand swelling, or morning joint stiffness may occur at the same time, so tell the clinician about both skin and joint changes.
