What should you know about epidural before c section?

An epidural is delivered through a small tube in the lower back. For surgery, the anaesthetist can give a stronger dose through that tube so the abdomen and lower body become numb. You are generally awake and can hear the birth, while the surgical team checks that the anaesthetic is working before proceeding.

An existing labour epidural may sometimes be topped up if a Caesarean becomes necessary. A planned operation may instead involve another regional technique. The choice depends on urgency, medical history, blood-clotting considerations, and the anaesthetist’s assessment.

Tell the team about allergies, blood-thinning medicine, bleeding problems, infection, back conditions, and any previous difficulty with anaesthesia. Ask how you will be monitored, when you can drink, and how pain will be managed after the operation. You may have a urinary catheter while numb and should request help before standing.

If the Caesarean follows Induction of Labour or treatment involving Oxytocin, ask how those medicines and the anaesthetic plan fit together. Postnatal Physiotherapy may help with safe movement and recovery when your maternity team recommends it.

During or after surgery, report breathing difficulty, faintness, chest discomfort, severe pain despite medication, or new weakness. After discharge, seek medical advice for fever, worsening wound pain, heavy bleeding, severe headache that is worse upright, increasing back pain, or leg numbness or weakness that persists. A severe headache with high blood pressure symptoms needs prompt assessment, particularly if you have had Pre-eclampsia.

Ask which regional anaesthetic is planned, what you may feel during surgery, what happens if the block is incomplete, and which medicines are safe while feeding. Ask when to call for wound, bleeding, headache, or neurological symptoms.
