What should you know about eosinophilic asthma?

How the structures involved in Asthma differ from normal

Short answer

Eosinophilic asthma is an asthma pattern in which eosinophils contribute to airway inflammation and symptoms such as wheezing, cough, or chest tightness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

Eosinophils are immune cells. When they are active in the airways, swelling and mucus can narrow the tubes that carry air. Symptoms may come and go, worsen with triggers, or continue despite ordinary asthma care. Eosinophilic asthma can occur with or without allergy symptoms, so a clinician considers the whole pattern rather than one symptom alone.

Assessment may include your symptom history, breathing tests, examination, and tests that look for allergic or eosinophilic inflammation. A diagnosis is not made from a home symptom check.

What you can do

Arrange a clinical review if asthma symptoms are recurring, disturbing sleep, limiting activity, or needing reliever medicine more often. Take prescribed inhalers exactly as directed and ask for an inhaler-technique check; poor technique can leave medicine in the mouth instead of the lungs. Keep a record of triggers, symptoms, reliever use, and any missed doses.

Reduce exposures that clearly worsen your breathing, such as smoke, strong fumes, or known allergens. Do not stop a controller inhaler because you feel better without discussing it with your clinician. Severe flare-ups may require urgent treatment, including a nebuliser in some settings.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help if breathing is severely difficult, you cannot speak comfortably in full sentences, your lips look blue or grey, you become unusually drowsy, or your reliever is not helping as your action plan says it should. Contact a clinician promptly for worsening wheeze, persistent chest tightness, or a cough that is not settling.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms fit an eosinophilic pattern, and which breathing or blood tests would help? How should I use each inhaler, and what is my written action plan? Which triggers should I prioritise avoiding, and when should I seek urgent care?

Questions people ask

Is eosinophilic asthma the same as an allergy?

No. Eosinophilic inflammation can occur with or without allergy, although some people have both asthma and allergic conditions.

Can symptoms be controlled?

Many people can improve control with an individual plan, correct inhaler technique, trigger management, and prescribed treatment.
