A positive result does not show how severe the illness is by itself. Blocked milk flow, nipple injury, oversupply, inflammation without infection, or an abscess can also affect symptoms.

Arrange review if symptoms are persistent, spreading, or associated with fever. Continue breastfeeding or expressing as tolerated unless your clinician gives a different instruction; abrupt stopping can worsen breast fullness. Feed responsively, check that the baby is well positioned, and avoid forceful massage or excessive pumping. Cool packs, rest, fluids, and suitable pain relief may help.
