Can endometrial ablation stop periods?

Ablation treats the inner lining of the womb so it has less tissue to shed. Some people stop bleeding; others have lighter, shorter or irregular periods. The outcome can depend on the lining, the cause of heavy periods and whether conditions such as adenomyosis are present. It does not remove the womb, ovaries or the ability to become pregnant, and pregnancy after ablation can be dangerous.

Before treatment, ask how bleeding will be evaluated and whether a hysteroscope or other test is needed. Discuss contraception that will remain reliable after the procedure, including whether a hormonal coil is appropriate. Follow instructions about medicines, preparation and recovery. Record bleeding before and after treatment, including clots, pain and changes in cycle pattern, so persistent symptoms can be reviewed.

Contact your care team for heavy bleeding that does not settle, worsening pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, faintness or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding with weakness or a possible pregnancy after ablation. New or continuing bleeding may need investigation rather than another procedure being assumed.
