What should you know about emergency salpingectomy?

A fallopian tube carries an egg from an ovary toward the uterus. In an ectopic pregnancy, a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, commonly in a tube, where growth can cause rupture and internal bleeding. Removing the affected tube may be recommended when damage is severe, bleeding is present, or another treatment is not suitable. The other tube and ovary may remain in place, depending on the operation and your anatomy.

The operation may be performed through small abdominal openings using keyhole surgery, or through a larger incision when urgent access is needed. Your surgical team will explain what was found and whether any related treatment was required.

After surgery, follow instructions about wound care, movement, bathing, lifting, driving, and pain relief. Fatigue and abdominal or shoulder-tip discomfort can occur after keyhole surgery. Attend follow-up appointments and complete any requested pregnancy-hormone tests, because levels need monitoring until the pregnancy tissue has resolved. Ask when it is safe to resume sex and when future pregnancy planning can be discussed.

Seek urgent help for worsening abdominal pain, faintness, heavy vaginal bleeding, breathlessness, fever, repeated vomiting, or a swollen, red, leaking wound. Sudden shoulder-tip pain with weakness can signal internal bleeding and needs immediate assessment. Contact your surgical team if pain relief is not working or your recovery is moving in the wrong direction.

Ask which tube was removed, whether the other tube looks healthy, what follow-up tests are planned, how this affects future pregnancy, which warning signs matter, and when contraception or specialist support should be considered.
