What should you know about emergency cystoscopy?

A urologist passes a narrow cystoscope through the urethra into the bladder. Local anaesthetic gel, sedation, or a general anaesthetic may be used depending on the urgency and the planned procedure. The camera lets the team inspect the lining, look for a bleeding point, and sometimes take a biopsy or treat a small problem during the same session. An urgent examination does not by itself confirm cancer; bladder conditions can have several causes.

You may notice stinging when passing urine, a stronger urge to urinate, or a small amount of blood for a short time afterwards. The team considers your symptoms, urine tests, medicines, and examination findings before deciding what happens next. Blood in the urine can be a presentation of bladder cancer, but it needs medical assessment rather than a conclusion from the symptom alone.

Tell the team about allergies, pregnancy, blood thinners, urinary infections, and previous reactions to anaesthesia. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and arranging transport if sedation or general anaesthesia is planned. Ask whether you should continue regular medicines.

Afterwards, drink according to the team’s advice, rest if you had sedation, and follow instructions about activity. Ask when results will be ready and whether a sample was sent for laboratory examination. Do not drive until the anaesthesia team says it is safe.

Contact the treating service urgently for inability to pass urine, worsening lower-abdominal swelling or pain, heavy or persistent bleeding, fever, chills, vomiting, faintness, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These symptoms can signal infection, clot blockage, or another complication that needs prompt review. Use emergency services if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening.
