What should you know about electronystagmography and Meniere's disease?

Electronystagmography records involuntary eye movements to help assess balance pathways when Meniere's disease is being considered. It is one part of an assessment and cannot confirm the condition by itself.

The test may involve sensors around the eyes, watching moving targets, changing head position, and carefully introducing warm or cool air near the ear. These activities can trigger brief eye movements that reflect vestibular responses. The clinician combines the pattern with episodes of vertigo, hearing changes, ear pressure, ringing, examination findings, and a hearing test.

Ask the clinic whether you should adjust medicines, avoid eye makeup, or arrange someone to accompany you. Tell the team about ear surgery, an active ear infection, severe neck problems, or medicines that affect balance. Bring details of attacks, including triggers, duration, hearing changes, ringing, and vomiting.

Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss, new weakness, trouble speaking, fainting, severe headache, or vertigo with inability to walk. Arrange medical review for repeated vertigo, persistent imbalance, or hearing symptoms. Do not assume that every dizzy spell is Meniere's disease; other causes need assessment.
