What should you know about an electrocardiogram graph?

The tracing is made of repeated wave shapes. The waves reflect electrical activation and recovery as the heartbeat moves through the upper and lower chambers. Clinicians examine the rhythm, the spacing between beats, and the shape of each complex. A tracing can suggest an irregular rhythm, strain on the heart, or reduced blood flow, but an unusual-looking line is not a diagnosis by itself. Movement, loose electrodes, or a fast heartbeat can affect the recording.

Keep the written report or image and ask the requesting clinician to explain each finding in plain language. Tell them about chest discomfort, breathlessness, fainting, palpitations, medicines, and previous heart problems.
