What should you know about egg and embryo freezing?

Both pathways usually begin with medicines that encourage several eggs to mature, monitoring with scans and blood tests, and a procedure to collect the eggs. With egg freezing, the collected eggs are rapidly cooled and stored for possible fertilisation later. With embryo freezing, eggs are fertilised in the laboratory before suitable embryos are frozen. Embryo freezing therefore involves sperm and may require decisions about whose sperm is used and how embryos may be used in the future.

The freezing method is commonly called vitrification. Storage does not mean a pregnancy is created at that point; pregnancy would require a later treatment cycle. The number and condition of eggs or embryos available can vary from one person and cycle to another.
