What should you know about effects of sepsis?

Sepsis is an extreme response to an infection. Inflammation and changes in circulation may reduce the oxygen reaching organs such as the kidneys, lungs, brain and heart. The original infection may begin in the lungs, urinary system or skin; pneumonia, a urinary tract infection and cellulitis are examples of conditions that can lead to sepsis.

During or after treatment, a person may have fever or chills, confusion, breathlessness, reduced urine, marked tiredness or general weakness. Recovery depends on the infection, how quickly treatment starts and which organs were affected. Some people regain strength quickly, while others need follow-up for fatigue, concentration, mood, sleep or physical function.

Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed and attend follow-up appointments, even if the infection feels better. Ask about medicines that may affect the kidneys, activity limits, hydration and a gradual return to work or exercise. Keep a simple record of temperature, breathing changes, urine output and energy so new or worsening problems are easier to describe.

Rest in short periods, eat small nourishing meals if appetite is low, and increase activity slowly. Do not dismiss new confusion, worsening weakness or reduced urine as ordinary tiredness after illness.

Seek emergency help for new confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, cold clammy skin, severe weakness, a rapidly worsening illness or very little urine. These signs can indicate that circulation or organ function is deteriorating. A fever, chills or feeling generally unwell with a suspected infection also deserves prompt medical assessment, especially in a person who is older, pregnant, immunocompromised or living with a serious long-term condition.
