Effects of influenza

Influenza is a viral infection that can trigger inflammation throughout the body. Symptoms may begin abruptly and include Fever, Chills, Cough, Headache, Fatigue and Feeling Generally Unwell. Muscle aches, sore throat, reduced appetite and marked tiredness may accompany the illness.

The cough and low energy can linger after the fever improves. Influenza can also affect the lungs; Pneumonia is a complication that needs medical attention, particularly when breathing becomes harder or the illness improves and then worsens.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and use comfortable clothing and room temperature to manage fever and chills. Follow label directions for suitable symptom relief, and avoid taking overlapping products with the same ingredient. Stay home while acutely unwell and reduce close contact with others.

Contact a clinician early if you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised or have a long-term heart or lung condition, because treatment decisions may depend on personal risk and how soon symptoms began.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or extreme weakness. Arrange medical advice if fever persists, symptoms worsen after initial improvement, or a cough becomes more severe with breathlessness.
