What should you know about eczema from washing dishes?

Short answer
Washing dishes can aggravate hand eczema through repeated wetting, detergent exposure and friction; protection, gentle cleansing and moisturising help support the skin barrier.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical irritants
- Water, detergent, heat and repeated scrubbing
- After dishwashing
- Dry hands gently and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser
Why dishwashing can trigger symptoms
Frequent contact with water can dry the outer skin after it evaporates. Detergents remove oils that help protect the hands, while heat, scrubbing and food residues may add irritation. The result can be tightness, itch, redness, scaling or painful cracks on the fingers, palms and backs of the hands. Atopic dermatitis may make this barrier more reactive, but contact dermatitis can look similar and may need a different plan.
Protect your hands during wet work
Use well-fitting waterproof gloves with a soft, dry liner, and remove them if water becomes trapped inside. Keep the water lukewarm and use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed. Rinse away detergent, pat hands dry carefully, then apply a thick fragrance-free emollient, including around the nails. Moisturise after washing and before sleep. Avoid rings during dishwashing if they trap soap or moisture. Do not use strong disinfectants or household remedies on cracked skin without professional advice.
When professional advice is needed
Book an assessment if hand symptoms persist despite changing dishwashing habits, interfere with work, or repeatedly split open. Painful swelling, spreading redness, warmth, pus, yellow crusts or fever warrant prompt care because broken skin can become infected. A clinician may check for contact triggers and choose treatment based on the location and severity of the inflammation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern fits atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis, which gloves and moisturiser to use, and how to manage treatment around cracked knuckles or fingertips.
