What should you know about eczema cracked skin?

Fissures are splits in the outer skin layer. They commonly hurt when the area bends, stretches, or contacts water, and they may bleed slightly. Hands, fingers, feet, lips, and skin folds are vulnerable because washing, pressure, and movement repeatedly challenge the barrier. Atopic Dermatitis can cause this pattern, but Psoriasis and irritant exposure can also produce cracking. Location, scale, itch, and the history of triggers help a clinician tell them apart.

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, then pat dry. Apply an emollient generously while the skin is still slightly damp and repeat whenever the area feels tight. Cover painful splits with a clean dressing that does not stick to the wound. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, but remove them if sweat builds up. Avoid picking, fragranced products, and harsh antiseptics unless prescribed. A clinician can advise whether an anti-inflammatory medicine or dressing is suitable.

Arrange an appointment if fissures keep reopening, limit hand or foot use, or do not improve with regular barrier care. Seek prompt help for pus, spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, fever, or worsening pain, which can indicate infection.
