Will a test be positive with ectopic pregnancy?

Home and clinic pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone made after implantation. An ectopic pregnancy can produce this hormone, so a positive result is possible. The test alone cannot locate the pregnancy or confirm that it is developing normally in the uterus.

A faint result, a changing result, or a negative result very early in pregnancy cannot settle the question. Clinicians may compare hormone levels over time and use a transvaginal ultrasound. Pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain should be reported rather than judged from the test line.

If your test is positive and you have pain or bleeding, seek prompt medical assessment. Even without symptoms, arrange pregnancy care so the location can be confirmed at the appropriate stage. Keep a record of test dates, bleeding, pain location, and any history of pelvic inflammatory disease or tubal surgery.

Emergency assessment is needed for sudden severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, unusual weakness, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These signs may indicate internal bleeding. A positive test should not delay emergency care, and a negative test does not make severe symptoms safe to ignore.

Ask which blood tests and ultrasound are needed, when results should be reviewed, and what symptoms require immediate return. If an ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed, ask how treatment will affect follow-up and whether surgery such as salpingectomy is being considered.
