Ectopic pregnancy symbol: what it means

A symbol on a scan report, app, chart, or health document may be a local abbreviation or sign used by that service. It cannot establish a diagnosis by itself. The clinical team uses your symptoms, pregnancy-hormone results, examination, and transvaginal ultrasound to assess whether implantation is outside the uterus.

Ask the service that produced the document to explain any unfamiliar mark, abbreviation, or colour coding. Words such as suspected, pregnancy of unknown location, or confirmed can describe different stages of assessment. Do not assume a symbol means the same thing in every clinic.

Pelvic pain or bleeding in early pregnancy needs medical advice because several conditions can cause them. Pelvic inflammatory disease may affect the tubes, but a past infection does not diagnose an ectopic pregnancy.

Keep the report or image available and contact the clinician who ordered it. Confirm whether you need repeat blood tests, another scan, or same-day review. Follow treatment instructions if an ectopic pregnancy has been diagnosed; options may include medicine or surgery such as salpingectomy.

Write down when pain and bleeding started, where pain is located, and whether it is changing. Take a support person to an appointment if that helps you remember information.

Seek emergency care immediately for severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, collapse, shoulder-tip pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, marked dizziness, or weakness. A symbol that appears reassuring should not delay care when red-flag symptoms are present.

Ask what the symbol means in that specific record, whether the pregnancy location is known, what your next test is, and which symptoms require emergency help. Ask for the explanation in plain language and request a copy of the plan.
