Where does an ectopic pregnancy implant?

An ectopic pregnancy begins outside the uterine cavity. Most occur in a fallopian tube, but implantation can occur in other locations around the reproductive organs. The location matters because growing tissue can cause internal bleeding or damage nearby structures.

Clinicians use symptoms, pregnancy-hormone blood tests, and transvaginal ultrasound to work out whether a pregnancy is inside the uterus and where it may be. An early scan may not show the location immediately, so repeat assessment can be needed.

Pelvic pain or vaginal bleeding can occur, but symptoms vary and may be mild at first. A history of pelvic inflammatory disease, previous tubal surgery, or a previous ectopic pregnancy can help the clinician assess the situation without proving where implantation has occurred.

If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, contact the maternity or gynaecology service arranging your assessment and follow the timing of blood tests and scans. Treatment may involve monitoring in selected situations, medicine, or surgery such as salpingectomy. The choice depends on your symptoms, scan findings, hormone results, and overall health.

Do not self-treat pain or delay a planned review because symptoms seem manageable. Keep a record of bleeding and pain, and tell the team about medicines, allergies, prior operations, and your wishes about future fertility.

Go to emergency care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, worsening dizziness, heavy bleeding, or unusual weakness. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding and need immediate assessment, even if a previous scan was reassuring.
