Can an ectopic pregnancy show on a pregnancy test?

Home and laboratory pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone made during pregnancy. They do not distinguish a pregnancy in the uterus from an ectopic pregnancy. A faint, delayed, or changing result also cannot locate the pregnancy. A positive test accompanied by pelvic pain or bleeding needs medical review, because pelvic pain is a common presentation of ectopic pregnancy while also occurring with other conditions.

Tell a clinician the date of your last menstrual period, the test result, and any pain or bleeding. Assessment may include repeated blood tests and a transvaginal ultrasound. The first scan can be too early to locate a pregnancy, so planned follow-up may be necessary. If an ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, treatment may involve medicine or surgery, including removal of an affected tube through salpingectomy in selected cases.

Go to emergency care for sudden or intense abdominal pain, one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, severe dizziness, heavy bleeding, or unusual weakness. A positive test does not make these symptoms safe to monitor at home. Seek help urgently even if the test line is faint or bleeding is light.

Ask whether the pregnancy location has been confirmed, when repeat blood testing or ultrasound should happen, and which symptoms need emergency action. Ask how treatment choices affect future pregnancy planning and what follow-up will be arranged.
