Can an ectopic pregnancy occur on the liver?

Most ectopic pregnancies develop in a fallopian tube. An abdominal ectopic pregnancy may attach to tissue around abdominal organs, so a person may describe it as being on the liver. This wording cannot confirm the diagnosis or the exact site. Upper abdominal discomfort, shoulder pain, or pelvic pain may have many explanations. Only clinical assessment and imaging can establish where a pregnancy is developing and whether bleeding is present.

If pregnancy is possible and you have abdominal pain or bleeding, contact a maternity or emergency service promptly. Clinicians may use pregnancy-hormone tests, ultrasound, and other imaging to map the pregnancy. Because an abdominal implantation can be close to major blood vessels or organs, treatment is planned by a specialist team. Medicine or surgery may be considered; the operation is tailored to the actual implantation site, so a salpingectomy is not suitable for every abdominal pregnancy.

Call emergency services for severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, collapse, shoulder-tip pain, fast breathing, or heavy vaginal bleeding. Internal bleeding may occur without heavy vaginal bleeding. Lie down if you feel faint and avoid driving yourself.

Ask what imaging has shown, whether the pregnancy is near the liver or another abdominal structure, and whether there is evidence of bleeding. Ask which specialists will be involved, what treatment is proposed, and how follow-up will monitor recovery.
