Where does an ectopic pregnancy occur?

The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries with the uterus, and an ectopic pregnancy commonly implants in one of them. Less common sites include the cervix, ovary, a caesarean-section scar, or the abdominal cavity. The location matters because growing pregnancy tissue can stretch or tear nearby structures. Pelvic pain is a common presentation of ectopic pregnancy, but pain can also have other causes, including pelvic inflammatory disease.

Arrange prompt medical assessment after a positive pregnancy test if you have pain, bleeding, or a history that raises concern. A clinician may combine an examination with blood tests and a transvaginal ultrasound. Sometimes the first scan does not show the location, so repeat testing and review of symptoms are needed. Treatment may involve medicine or an operation such as salpingectomy, depending on the site and clinical findings.

Seek emergency care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, or sudden weakness. An ectopic pregnancy can cause internal bleeding even when vaginal bleeding is light. If you feel unwell or faint, call emergency services rather than travelling alone.
