Where can an ectopic pregnancy implant?

The fallopian tube is the usual site because it is the route an egg travels before reaching the uterus. Less commonly, implantation can occur near the ovary, in the cervix, or within the abdomen. The site matters because each area has different space and blood supply as the pregnancy develops. Tubal inflammation or scarring, including changes linked with pelvic inflammatory disease, can affect how an egg moves.

A pregnancy test cannot show the implantation site. Clinicians use symptoms, examination, pregnancy hormone trends, and transvaginal ultrasound to locate the pregnancy. If imaging is not conclusive, repeat assessment may be arranged. Share any history of pelvic infection, tubal surgery, or a previous ectopic pregnancy so the team can interpret the findings safely.

Emergency assessment is needed for severe or increasing abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, or sudden weakness. A rupture can cause internal bleeding and may not wait for a scheduled scan. If these symptoms occur, seek help immediately and avoid travelling alone.

Ask whether the scan shows a pregnancy inside the uterus, where an ectopic pregnancy could be located, which follow-up test is needed, and how location affects treatment choices.
