How soon can an ectopic pregnancy be detected?

A home test detects pregnancy hormone but cannot show where the pregnancy is developing. A transvaginal ultrasound gives a closer view of the uterus and nearby structures. If the pregnancy is very early, the scan may be inconclusive. Clinicians may compare hormone results over time and repeat the scan. Pelvic pain or bleeding can make an earlier clinical review necessary, regardless of how far along you think you are.

Arrange prompt medical review after a positive test if you have pain, bleeding, previous tubal problems, or a history of pelvic inflammatory disease. Bring the date of your last menstrual period and any test results. The clinician may examine you, request blood tests, and arrange imaging. Keep every follow-up appointment until the pregnancy location and progress are understood.

Go to an emergency department for sudden intense pelvic or abdominal pain, pain that spreads to the shoulder, fainting, severe weakness, or heavy bleeding. Internal bleeding can develop without a clear change in pregnancy dates. If you feel light-headed, ask someone to stay with you while help is arranged.

Ask what your hormone results mean, whether the scan has located the pregnancy, when testing should be repeated, and what number to call outside clinic hours.
