Can a pregnancy test detect an ectopic pregnancy?

Home and clinic pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced after implantation. An ectopic pregnancy can produce this hormone, so the result may be positive. The test does not identify the implantation site, and a negative result does not safely rule out a very early pregnancy. Clinicians combine your dates and symptoms with blood tests and imaging.
