Electrodes detect tiny electrical signals associated with each heartbeat. The recorder displays these signals as waves and intervals that help a clinician assess rhythm and conduction. Different models can have different screens, leads, accessories, or paper systems, while the clinical purpose remains similar. An automated message can flag a pattern, but it should be checked by a qualified professional.

Tell the technician about symptoms happening that day, implanted heart devices, skin sensitivity, or trouble lying still. Allow the skin to be cleaned before the electrodes are placed. Keep your arms and legs relaxed, breathe normally, and avoid speaking during the capture. If an electrode loosens, mention it instead of repositioning it yourself so the tracing remains reliable.

An ECG can support assessment of chest symptoms, a racing heartbeat, dizziness, or breathlessness. Get emergency help for intense or ongoing chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or a sudden combination of weakness and confusion. The presence of a named machine does not make an urgent symptom less urgent.

Ask which ECG leads were recorded, whether the signal quality was adequate, and what the clinician concluded. Find out whether your symptoms call for monitoring over a longer period or a different investigation.
