What should you know about an ECG machine test?

You usually lie still while trained staff place adhesive sensors on the chest and sometimes the limbs. The sensors connect to the ECG machine, which records the heart's electrical signals. You may feel the stickers being applied or removed, but the machine does not send electricity through your body. Staying relaxed and avoiding talking or movement helps reduce interference.

The tracing can provide information about rate, rhythm, and electrical timing at that moment. The machine's printed wording is not the final diagnosis. A clinician interprets the tracing with your symptoms, examination, medicines, and earlier results.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and limbs, and tell staff if your skin reacts to adhesives. Take medicines as prescribed unless the testing team gives different instructions. Mention chest discomfort, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, or breathlessness, including when they started and whether they come and go. Ask when and how the result will be explained.

Do not wait for a routine test if you have severe or persistent chest pain or pressure, severe difficulty breathing, fainting, sudden confusion, or a rapid or irregular heartbeat with marked weakness. Seek emergency help. A routine ECG is a recording tool and should not delay urgent assessment.

Ask: Why was this test requested? What did the tracing show? Could an intermittent symptom be missed? Do I need another recording or monitoring? Should I follow any instructions before a future test?
