What should you know about ECG machine suppliers?

A supplier may provide the recorder, electrodes and cables, software, user instructions, installation, staff training, and technical support. The right device depends on the setting: a clinic may need a compact machine for resting recordings, while a service investigating intermittent symptoms may need compatible monitoring equipment. Ask whether the system can export or print a readable tracing and whether it works with your existing records workflow.

Quality also depends on correct electrode placement, clean skin, charged equipment, and a calm recording. A supplier cannot replace clinical interpretation; the healthcare team remains responsible for checking the tracing and acting on symptoms.

Ask who will install and test the machine, how users are trained, how faults are handled, and how replacement cables and electrodes are obtained. Confirm cleaning instructions, electrical safety checks, software updates, storage of patient information, and compatibility with the clinic's documentation system. Keep a maintenance log and ensure staff know how to recognise recording artefact.

A device decision must not delay assessment of a person with chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden confusion, or a heartbeat problem with marked weakness. Arrange emergency care for those symptoms. Equipment concerns such as a failed recording should be reported to the clinical team, especially when the patient is symptomatic.

Ask: Which ECG capability suits my assessment? Who will interpret the tracing? How will urgent findings be communicated? What happens if the first recording is affected by artefact? When should symptoms be assessed even if the machine is working normally?
