What should you know about an ECG machine model?

Models may differ in portability, screen layout, paper printing, digital storage, battery use, and connections to a clinic’s records system. Some provide prompts for signal quality or electrode placement. These are workflow features, not a substitute for the healthcare professional’s judgement. A model label alone cannot explain your result or show whether a symptom is harmless.

A clinician or technician places electrodes on clean skin and asks you to rest while the machine records. Wear loose clothing and mention chest hair, skin conditions, adhesive reactions, or an implanted cardiac device before placement. Keep still and do not deliberately change your breathing unless instructed. You can ask how the result will be shared and who will discuss it with you.

Seek urgent help for new chest pressure, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or a rapid deterioration. Do not choose care based on the machine model available. If symptoms are intermittent, tell your clinician when they happen because a brief resting ECG may not capture an episode.

Ask what the model can record, whether the tracing is clear, what the result means for your symptoms, and whether monitoring during an episode would add useful information.
