What should you know about ECG machine function?

Electrodes collect tiny changes in electrical activity as the heart beats. Wires or wireless connections carry those signals to the device, which presents them as lines on paper or a screen. The pattern can help a clinician assess rate, rhythm, conduction, and signs that require further evaluation.

Before the recording, mention medicines, a pacemaker or other implanted device, and any reason you may have difficulty lying still. Follow the clinic’s instructions about clothing and preparation. During the test, relax your arms and legs, keep still, and answer questions about symptoms or when they began.

Call emergency services for severe chest discomfort, collapse, marked breathlessness, or new symptoms suggesting a serious heart or circulation problem. The machine can record information quickly, but a normal-looking tracing does not make severe symptoms safe to ignore.

Ask what the ECG is intended to check, whether the recording was clear, and how its findings fit with your symptoms and examination. If symptoms come and go, ask whether longer monitoring or another test could capture an episode.
