What should you know about ECG machine electrodes?

Each electrode picks up a signal from a particular position. The pattern from all sensors together helps create a view of the heart’s electrical activity. Hair, movement, sweat, or a loose adhesive edge can interfere with contact and create a noisy tracing; a clinician may clean the skin or replace an electrode.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and limbs. Tell the healthcare professional if you have a rash, wound, allergy to adhesives, or a cardiac device. During the recording, lie quietly and avoid speaking or tensing your muscles unless asked. Removal may briefly tug on hair or sensitive skin.

An electrode reaction is usually limited to local redness or irritation, but seek medical advice if swelling, blistering, or worsening discomfort continues after removal. For chest pressure, fainting, serious breathing difficulty, or a sudden change in symptoms, seek emergency care rather than focusing on the electrodes.

Ask where the electrodes will be placed, whether your skin needs special preparation, and what to do if adhesive causes irritation. You can also ask how the tracing quality was checked and whether a repeat recording is needed.
