Early symptoms of toxic shock syndrome

Early toxic shock syndrome symptoms can develop suddenly and may include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle aches, dizziness, confusion, or a widespread rash. The illness can worsen quickly, so a cluster of sudden symptoms needs urgent medical assessment rather than home observation.

Toxic shock syndrome is a serious reaction to toxins produced by certain bacteria. It may occur with an infected wound, after surgery, or in association with tampon use or another device. Skin redness can spread and later peel, while low blood pressure may cause faintness, weakness, or confusion. These features are not specific to toxic shock syndrome, but their sudden combination is concerning. Asthma symptoms such as wheezing or chest tightness are different problems and should not be used to explain away a sudden fever and collapse.

Seek urgent medical help if toxic shock syndrome is possible. Tell the clinician about any recent wound, operation, skin infection, tampon use, or inserted medical device. If a tampon is in place, remove it, but do not delay emergency care. Avoid driving if you feel faint or confused. Keep the person accompanied, note when the symptoms began, and take a list of medicines and allergies if available.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, blue or grey lips, a rapidly spreading rash, or inability to keep fluids down. Urgent assessment is also needed for sudden fever with vomiting or diarrhoea after a wound, procedure, or tampon use. Do not wait for every symptom to appear.

Ask what may be causing the symptoms, whether a wound or device needs examination, which tests are needed, and which warning signs should prompt a return to emergency care.
