What should you know about early gout in hands?

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals collecting in a joint. A flare may affect a finger, knuckle, or wrist and can make light touch uncomfortable. The skin may look red or shiny, and bending the joint may become difficult. Gout can also affect the feet, ankle, or knee, so ankle swelling, knee pain, or knee swelling may appear in the same person at different times.

A swollen hand joint has several possible causes, including infection, injury, and other forms of arthritis. A clinician may examine the joint, review medicines and health conditions, and use blood tests or joint-fluid testing when needed. Chronic kidney disease and some metabolic factors can change urate handling, but a symptom does not identify its cause by itself.

Arrange medical review for a new hot, swollen hand joint, especially if pain began quickly. Rest the joint in a comfortable position, avoid pressure, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if it helps. Do not start, stop, or change urate-lowering or flare medicines without advice. A clinician can discuss long-term prevention, hydration, medication review, and conditions such as obesity that may affect gout care.

Seek urgent care for a hot swollen joint with fever, chills, feeling faint, rapidly spreading redness, or a wound nearby, because infection needs prompt treatment. Seek immediate help if hand swelling follows major injury or the fingers become numb, blue, or cold.

Ask whether the joint needs fluid testing, what to use during a flare, and whether your medicines or kidney function affect treatment. Ask how recurring attacks will be prevented and what monitoring is needed.
