What should you know about ear piercing keloid removal?

A keloid is an overgrown scar that can extend beyond the original piercing. It may be firm, smooth, itchy, tender, darker or redder than surrounding skin, and gradually enlarge. A raised ear lump is not automatically a keloid: infection, a hypertrophic scar, a cyst, or another skin lesion can resemble it. Diagnosis is based on its appearance, history, and examination.

Do not cut, tie, squeeze, or freeze the lump at home. A specialist may discuss steroid injections, pulsed dye laser treatment, fractional laser treatment, cryotherapy, or keloid removal surgery. Surgery may be paired with another treatment to reduce the chance of regrowth. The choice depends on size, firmness, symptoms, previous treatment, skin tone, and whether the earlobe or cartilage is involved.

Arrange a dermatology review when a piercing lump is enlarging, painful, itchy, or extending outside the piercing track. Seek prompt care if it becomes hot, increasingly red, rapidly swollen, or starts draining, especially with fever. Urgent assessment is also sensible if swelling affects the ear canal, hearing, or nearby facial skin.

Ask how certain the diagnosis is, whether removal is needed, what combination of treatments is proposed, and how the ear will be protected while it heals. Ask what recurrence signs to watch for and whether future piercings should be avoided.
