Ear infection and eye discharge: what it can mean

Eye discharge may be watery, sticky, or thick, and its appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A viral illness can affect the eyes and ears around the same time; irritation or conjunctivitis can also produce discharge independently of ear pain. A clinician may examine the ear, eye surface, eyelids, and nearby skin to distinguish these possibilities. A child with ear pain and sticky eyes may need a different review from an adult with mild watery discharge during a cold.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently wipe discharge away with clean, cooled water and a fresh pad for each eye; do not share towels, pillows, or eye cosmetics. Avoid contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and clear. Do not use leftover eye drops, especially drops intended to reduce redness, and arrange a review if the discharge persists, ear pain increases, or a child is unsettled.

Get urgent help for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling around the eye, inability to open the eye, or a chemical or penetrating injury. Seek prompt care for severe ear pain, swelling behind the ear, new facial weakness, significant dizziness, or a baby who appears very unwell.

Ask whether the ear and eye symptoms appear related, whether an eye swab or ear examination is needed, and which cleaning or treatment products are suitable. Confirm when it is safe to return to contact lenses, nursery, school, or work.
