Ear fullness and Meniere's disease: what should you know?

Meniere's disease affects the inner ear and may produce a feeling of pressure or fullness, commonly on one side. A person may also notice changing hearing, Ringing in the Ears, and attacks of Vertigo, during which the surroundings seem to spin. Ear fullness alone has many possible explanations, including wax, congestion, or other ear conditions, so it does not establish the diagnosis. A clinician considers the pattern, duration, and combination of symptoms.

Keep a record of when fullness occurs, which ear is affected, how long it lasts, and whether it comes with Dizziness, hearing change, ringing, nausea, or imbalance. Arrange a GP Consultation for recurring or one-sided symptoms. The clinician may examine the ear and arrange a Hearing Test to compare hearing between ears. During a spinning episode, sit or lie somewhere safe and avoid driving until balance has returned.

Seek prompt medical advice for sudden hearing loss, a new severe headache, weakness, trouble speaking, fainting, or difficulty walking. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe or persistent vertigo with repeated vomiting, chest symptoms, or inability to stay hydrated. Recurrent fullness with hearing changes or ringing deserves an appointment even when attacks have settled.
