Ear blocked due to swimming: what should you know?

Water can remain in the ear canal and make sounds seem muffled. Moisture may also irritate the canal, particularly after repeated swimming or if earbuds are used. When water reaches existing earwax, the wax can expand or shift and create pressure, reduced hearing, or a sensation of fullness. This does not by itself show that an infection is present.

Tilt your head with the affected ear facing down and gently pull the outer ear in different directions to help drainage. Dry the outside with a towel. Do not insert cotton buds, fingers, hairpins, or other objects, because they can push wax deeper or injure the canal. Avoid swimming until the sensation settles.
