Blocked ear due to earwax: what to know

Earwax protects the ear canal, but it can collect and become impacted, particularly when objects push it deeper. A blockage may cause muffled hearing, pressure, itch, earache, or ringing in the ears. Similar symptoms can come from an ear infection, a foreign object, a perforated eardrum, or a problem deeper in the ear, so symptoms alone cannot confirm wax. A clinician or pharmacist may inspect the canal before recommending softening drops or removal.

Do not use cotton buds, hairpins, candles, or other objects to dig in the ear. Ask a pharmacist whether wax-softening drops are suitable, and follow the instructions. Do not use drops if you have ear discharge, severe pain, a known eardrum hole, or previous ear surgery unless a clinician approves them. If blockage remains, professional ear wax removal may use appropriate equipment. Keep water out of the ear if it is sore or draining.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe pain, swelling around the ear, or blood or pus from the canal. Arrange a hearing test or medical review when hearing stays reduced, ringing persists, symptoms affect one ear repeatedly, or self-care does not help. Do not assume every blocked sensation is wax; examination protects against delaying treatment for another condition.
