What should you know about DVLA and Meniere's disease?

Meniere's disease can affect driving safety because vertigo, imbalance, hearing changes, or brain fog may occur unexpectedly. Do not drive during an attack, while you feel unsteady, or when a medicine makes you drowsy. If you drive for work or hold a vocational licence, tell your clinician that you need advice about the relevant licensing process.

Meniere's disease is an inner-ear condition associated with episodes of vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, fullness in the ear and ringing in the ears. Vertigo can make the road, dashboard, or surrounding vehicles appear to move. Nausea, sweating, imbalance, and difficulty concentrating can make it unsafe to control a vehicle even if the episode is brief.

Symptoms and their pattern differ between people. Some people have warning sensations before an episode; others do not. A symptom diary can record attacks, hearing changes, triggers, recovery time, and any medicines taken. This gives your clinician clearer information when discussing whether your symptoms are controlled enough for driving.

Arrange a GP Consultation or ear, nose and throat assessment if you have new or recurring vertigo, hearing loss, or ringing in the ears. Until you have individual advice, plan another way to travel if an attack could occur. Seek urgent medical help for vertigo with new weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, fainting, severe headache, chest pain, or difficulty walking that does not settle. Sudden hearing loss in one ear also needs prompt assessment. Do not drive yourself to urgent care while dizzy; ask someone to take you or use emergency services when needed.

Contact a clinician promptly when attacks are becoming more frequent, lasting longer, causing falls, or interfering with work, travel, or daily activities.

Ask: What diagnosis best explains my episodes? Could another inner-ear or neurological problem cause these symptoms? When should I stop driving after an attack? Do my medicines affect alertness? What information should I provide to the licensing authority, and when is specialist follow-up needed?
