Short answer

Vomiting medicine during travel should match the likely cause, your age and health, and the risk of dehydration.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Vomiting medicine during travel should match the likely cause, your age and health, and the risk of dehydration. A pharmacist or clinician can help select an appropriate option, especially if you take regular medicines, are pregnant, or are treating a child.

Why vomiting happens

Motion sickness often causes nausea, sweating and vomiting during movement. Contaminated food or water may cause food poisoning or gastroenteritis, commonly with cramps or diarrhoea. Migraine can bring vomiting with head pain or light sensitivity. Severe upper-abdominal pain can occur with gallstones or pancreatitis. Vomiting with a severe headache, stiff neck, confusion or a rash needs urgent attention because meningitis is one possible cause. Rotavirus infection is another infectious cause, particularly in young children.

Practical steps

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink and pause solid food briefly if it triggers vomiting. Once fluids stay down, try plain foods and avoid alcohol. For motion sickness, sit where movement is lowest, look toward the horizon and keep fresh air nearby. Use only medicine labelled for your age and situation; check whether it causes drowsiness or interacts with other medicines. Do not give a child an adult product.

When to get help

Get urgent medical help for blood or green vomit, severe or persistent abdominal pain, confusion, stiff neck, breathing difficulty, fainting, or a severe headache. Seek prompt care if no fluids stay down, urine becomes very dark or infrequent, the mouth is dry, or the person becomes unusually sleepy. Children, older adults and people with significant medical conditions can become dehydrated quickly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which cause is most plausible, which medicine fits your other treatments, how to prevent motion sickness, and what dehydration signs require help during the journey.
