How long does telogen effluvium last?

Telogen effluvium is a temporary shift in the hair-growth cycle. A physical or emotional stressor, illness, operation, major dietary change, hormonal change, or some medicines can move more hairs into a resting phase. Shedding may become noticeable after the trigger has already passed, which can make the timing feel confusing.

When the cycle begins to normalise, hair density does not return overnight. New hairs need time to emerge and lengthen, so reduced shedding and visible fullness are separate milestones. Ongoing stress or an unrecognised cause can keep the process active.

Record when shedding began and note recent illness, weight change, medication changes, menstrual or hormonal changes, and major stress. Eat regularly with adequate protein and avoid crash diets. Handle wet hair gently, limit tight hairstyles and harsh chemical treatments, and use a simple hair-care routine while the scalp settles.
