What should you know about dull flank pain?

The flank is the area between the ribs and hip. Pain after lifting, twisting, coughing, or sitting may involve muscles or the spine. A urinary cause deserves attention when discomfort comes with burning urination, frequent urges, cloudy urine, blood in urine, nausea, or pain moving toward the groin. Kidney infection presents with flank pain plus fever or feeling unwell; kidney stones can cause waves of pain. A urinary tract infection may cause urinary symptoms and can spread upward.

Location alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may also ask about bowel symptoms, injury, pregnancy, and medicines before choosing examination or urine testing.

Record onset, triggers, duration, and whether pain travels. Drink normally unless told to restrict fluids, and avoid heavy lifting until the pattern is clearer. Gentle movement is reasonable if comfortable. Follow medicine labels and ask a pharmacist if you have kidney disease, ulcers, pregnancy, or regular treatment. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Arrange medical advice if pain persists, returns, or comes with urinary changes. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, faintness, blood in urine, inability to pass urine, marked tenderness, significant injury, or possible pregnancy.

Ask whether the pattern is muscular or urinary, whether urine testing is useful, which pain relief is safe, and which changes require same-day care.
