Dry throat and cough: causes and care

A common cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, or dry air can irritate the throat and trigger coughing. Acid reflux may bring stomach contents towards the throat, often with symptoms after meals or when lying down. Asthma can present with cough, chest tightness, or wheeze, while chronic cough needs assessment for an underlying cause. Bronchiectasis and bronchiolitis are less common possibilities considered from the person's age, history, breathing pattern, and mucus.

The condition presents with a cough in its own characteristic pattern, but a cough does not identify the cause by itself. A clinician may listen to your chest, review medicines and smoking or vaping exposure, and decide whether further tests are useful.

Drink regularly, use warm fluids if soothing, and avoid smoke, vaping, perfumes, and dusty air. Honey may ease cough in adults and children over one year old. Rest your voice and consider a humidifier, keeping it clean. Treat nasal allergy or reflux only with advice suited to your symptoms and medicines.

Do not use someone else's inhaler or antibiotics. A pharmacist can check whether an over-the-counter product is suitable, especially for a child, pregnancy, asthma, or other long-term condition.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, or a severe asthma flare. Seek prompt advice for a high fever, rapid worsening, dehydration, noisy breathing, or a cough that persists or repeatedly interrupts sleep. A child who is struggling to breathe, feeding poorly, or unusually sleepy needs urgent assessment.
