Dry mouth, nausea and fatigue: what should you know?

Short answer
Dry mouth, nausea, and fatigue often reflect fluid loss or illness, but medicines and wider health problems can also contribute.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace fluids gradually if nausea allows.
- Useful record
- Urine, vomiting, diarrhoea, medicines, and symptom timing.
What the combination may mean
Nausea can reduce drinking and eating, while fluid loss from vomiting, diarrhoea, heat, or fever can leave the mouth dry and energy low. Dehydration may present with thirst, dark urine, dizziness, or passing urine less often. Viral illness, including COVID-19, can cause nausea and fatigue. Anaemia, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, alcohol use disorder, burnout, and chronic fatigue syndrome are among the conditions a clinician may consider when symptoms persist or recur. Fatigue is not specific to any one diagnosis, so the pattern and associated symptoms matter.
What to do today
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you have been losing fluid. Try bland foods in small portions when tolerated, and avoid alcohol. Rest, but keep a brief record of fluid intake, urine colour, nausea triggers, sleep, and any vomiting or diarrhoea. Review recent medicine changes with a pharmacist or clinician; do not stop prescribed treatment on your own. If symptoms follow heat exposure, move to a cool place and drink gradually.
When to seek care
Get same-day medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint on standing, are unusually drowsy, or are passing very little urine. Seek urgent help for confusion, severe weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Arrange a routine review when symptoms last beyond a short illness, keep returning, or come with weight change, persistent diarrhoea, swelling, or marked paleness. Assessment may include examination and blood or urine tests.
Questions for your doctor
Could dehydration explain this pattern? Do my medicines, diet, menstrual history, or alcohol use matter? Would blood or urine tests help? What fluid plan is suitable for me?

Questions people ask
Can dehydration cause all three symptoms?
Yes. Losing fluid can dry the mouth and cause tiredness, while the underlying illness or fluid loss may also cause nausea.
When is fatigue more concerning?
Arrange a review when fatigue persists, recurs, or comes with faintness, very low urine output, bleeding, pain, or breathing difficulty.
