Dry itchy scalp with sores

Sores may begin when repeated scratching breaks an itchy, flaky surface. They can also occur with folliculitis, contact irritation, seborrheic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, or head lice. Crusting, drainage, warmth, swelling, or tenderness makes infection more concerning. Dandruff alone can itch, but the appearance and location of the sores matter. A scalp symptom does not identify a single cause without examination.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free shampoo, then pat dry without rubbing. Keep nails short, avoid picking, and pause hair dye, sprays, fragranced products, tight styles, and concentrated oils. Do not share combs, brushes, towels, or hats if lice are possible. Avoid applying household antiseptics or leftover prescription creams; a clinician can decide whether a medicated shampoo treatment or another treatment is suitable.

Arrange a prompt appointment for open or recurring sores, pus, yellow crust, bleeding, hair loss, painful bumps, or symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, or feeling unwell. Breathing trouble or sudden facial swelling requires emergency help. Until assessed, avoid scratching and do not share personal hair items.
